Coordination and Subordination – Sentence Style and Emphasis

Three Correct Coordination –

• If significance is marked then one is easily able to pick out the key takeaways and stop to read more or keep moving.
  • This sentence that I pulled is coordination because the keyword of “and” is used to combine the fact that significance is the ability to pick out keywords and choose whether or not to keep reading.
• Haas realized how she viewed her textbooks as autonomous and sources for facts to be memorized and learned.
  • This is coordination because “and” is used to combine the fact that textbooks are seen as autonomous and sources for facts to new college students.  
• She never looked at the text as questionable or skimmable for the overall idea and impact on the scientific community.
  • This is also coordination because it uses “and” to connect the two points of questionable and skimmable due to them being similar words in this context.

Two Correct Subordination –

• After all, science is about discovery, and often one idea is linked to recent research.
• This sentence is subordination because it uses the term “after” at the beginning to state the overarching idea in scientific discovery.
• Though without this correction, she couldn’t be in the discourse, it required deeper knowledge than assuming validity and memorization once again.  
  • (my edit to the original in this example would be the addition of though)
  • This is subordination because it uses “though” to state how simply viewing textbooks as factual evidence she wouldn’t be included in the scientific discourse.
